Background: This book is Rabbeinu the Rema’s first book. It was written in the city of Shidlov, Poland, to where the Rema moved after an outbreak of a plague in the area of Krakow. The author dedicated the book to his father, as a substitute for Mishlo’ach Manot, which he could not send him being the poor refugee he was. In his commentary, the author compares the story of Megilas Ester to the varied stages of a man’s life.
