"I have told you, my dear father! several times that it is most difficult in our time to strengthen and make an effort against the heresy and lies and increase our faith and religion … If your Torah hadn’t sustained me with joy, I would have died in my misery" – letter by Rabbi Yaakov Hollander to his father Rabbi Yeshaya Hollander, for his birthday, with blessings and gratitude for having taught him Torah and educating him to follow G-d, which is what sustains him in this time. Berlin, [1868].
[2] pp. approx. [40] lines, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yaakov Hollander. At the beginning of the letter, a poem with two acrostics of Yeshayahu. Enclosed with the letter is a piece of paper on which it was written "To deliver to my father, teacher and Rav, Rabbi Yeshaya Hollander".

Background: This letter is a fascinating personal testimony of the life of an observant boy in Berlin at a time when Reform Judaism became popular, encouraging Jewish youth to abandon the Torah and Mitzvos. In his letter, the boy thanks his father for teaching him Torah, which is what rescues, strengthens and encourages him.
