Letter by the Gaon Rabbi Yehoshua of Horodna, protesting against the debasement of the Torah’s honor and non-sufficient support of poor Torah sages. Jerusalem, [1947].
"The Torah’s honor has deteriorated drastically due to our many sins, nevertheless, I am not at liberty to dishonor the Torah and its soldiers and accept the three Lir[ot] which he sent me for poor Torah sages…’; autograph by Rabbi Yehoshua Zimbalist explaining why he is returning a letter he had received with a pittance for supporting poor Torah sages and asking to be sent back his letter so he will be able to send it to other donors who appreciate the Torah’s honor and sympathize with its learners.

The Gaon Rabbi Yehoshua ben Rabbi Aharon Zimbalist of Horodna (Grodno) (1865-1947) Rav, Gaon and a famed Tzaddik. Studied at the Tomchei Torah in Minsk and later served as Moreh Tzeddek and Rosh Yeshiva in Minsk. In 1933, managed to leave Bolshevik Russia and immigrate as a refugee to Eretz Yisroel, where he volunteered to serve as the president of the Union of Rabbi Russian Refugees in Jerusalem and as a member of the halachic enterprise of Otzar Haposkim.
