Shtar Chatzi Zachar – Oben Yashan / Bogard – Shevat 1795
This Shtar Chatzi Zachar was written and signed in the village of Bogard on Wednesday, the 14th of Shevat, 1795. The giver of the gift/dowry was Rabbi Nosson Note Zvi Hirsch (known as Rabbi Note Hersch] ben Rabbi Avraham Aharon of Oben Yashan. His daughter is Mrs. Reisel, the wife of Rabbi Shmuel ben Rabbi Alexander Zissel. The sum of the (imaginary) debt to his daughter is 1500 Reinish. The signatories are Rabbi Note Hersch himself and the witnesses Fishcel Reich, the Shamash of Oben Yashan and Rabbi Yaakov ben Rabbi Moshe Leib.
Shtar Chatzi Zachar is a deed a man gives his daughter with her marriage, stating that she will receive half of what his son inherits from him, although according to the Jewish law, a married daughter inherits nothing. The deed is based on several halachic "patents", including that of Sephardic sages. In the deed it is written that the father supposedly owes his daughter a large sum of money. If her brothers, his heirs, cannot pay that debt after his passing, they are obliged to give their sister a half of the assets that they had inherited. Usually, only wealthy men could write such a deed for their daughters on their wedding day.
