Lengthy and touching letter by Rabbi Avraham Zvi Klein of Almoshka to his Rav the Gaon Rabbi Ber Av Beis Din of Miklosh, a disciple of the Chasam Sofer – Almoshka (Transylvania), 1844.
Bckground: The writer, Rabbi Avraham Zvi Klein, married the daughter of a wealthy man in Almoshka, Transylvania, the agreement between them being that the father-in-law will support his son-in-law to leave him free to study Torah. Eventually, the father-in-law shied away from his duties, claiming he could no longer support the couple. Therefore, rabbi Avraham was forced to work for a living as a merchant. He was successful yet broken-hearted because he could no longer study Torah as he wished.
In this letter, Rabbi Avraham Zvi Klein writes to his Rav Rabbi Ber Av Beis Din of Miklosh (about him see: HeChasaf Sofer Uvnei Doro, p. 234) stating that his father-in-law’s economic situation was not really difficult as the in-law was telling everybody. As evidence, Rabbi Klein tells his Rav that his in-law was now looking for a Shiduch for his daughter and offered to support the son of the Rav of Makova (the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ulman, author of the Yeriot Shlomo) if he were to marry his daughter. Rabbi Klein adds that he believes the reason he was not appointed a rabbinic position is because he has no friends in the town who can appreciate his value. Therefore, he asks his Rav and help him so that in the future he will be able to return to the study of the Torah.
In the last part of the letter, Rabbi Klein writes to his Rav an innovation on tractate Psachim.
