Kuntres Sefat Emet by the Sanz Chassidim on the Sanz – Sadigura polemic – Ungvar 1869 – invaluable
The polemic booklet Sefat Emet which was written on the heated dispute between the courts of Sanz and Sadigura. This booklet was published by the Sanz Chassidim against the Sadigura Chassidim.
The booklet was written in a mocking, lashing-out style and it contains biting satire, jests and cynicism, typical of Chassidim and disciples "protecting" their rabbis.
The famed dispute between the courts of Sanz and Sadigura began in Adar 1869, following a series of sharp letters published in those days by the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, calling to ban the Sadigura, Chortekov, Husiatyn and Liova Chassidim. In his book Hetzitz VeNifga, Prof. David Asaf details the background of the controversy and the controversial issues.
About the booklets that were published during the dispute, Asaf writes in the introduction to his book: "At the height of the conflict, from Nissan 1869 to winter 1870, at least twenty five lampoons were published, most of them representing the ‘attacking’ side, that is, Sanz. Only few copies of each of these booklets survived in libraries and private collections and they are considered invaluable.
This booklet deals with the spreading of the dispute in Eretz Yisroel, to Jerusalem and Safed, where Rabbi Nissan Beck, an important Ruzhin Chassid, banned the holy Gaon the Divrei Chaim of Sanz and the managers of Kollel Osterreich issued a threat that anyone who does not take part in the ban will not receive the money of the Chalukah of the Kollel. Printed on the first 12 leaves of the booklet are letters and documents against the ban against the holy Gaon of Sanz.
The second part of the Kuntres copies the Kol Koreh of Rabbi Dov Ber of Liova, which was published in the newspaper, in which he retracts his joining the intellectuals. Appearing after each passage of the Kol Koreh there are words of contempt and ridicule.
Appearing at the end of the booklet is a "הערה מחכם א’" (Comment by Sage A) with words of mockery against "the Tzaddik of Romenev Talmud Dober Na", apparently referring to the Admor Rabbi Yosef Hacohen Friedman of Rimanov, the youngest son of the holy Rav Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Romanov, who grew up in the house of the holy Saba of Ruzhin, who was a thorn in the side of the Sanz Chassidim and was one of the causes of the famed dispute.
