Three pages handwritten by the great Gaon Rabbi Asher Av Beis Din of Karlsruhe, the son of the Sha’agas Aryeh – with a Pilpul from a sermon he had delivered on Sabbas Shuva on "טומאה הותרה בציבור".
This Pilpul was first printed at the end of the book Gevurat Aryeh on tractate Yoma, Piotrkow 1907. The book was edited by the author of the Chafetz Chaim, who was also its first publisher. These are paragraphs 7-9 that remained of the entire manuscript.
In his foreword to the book Gevurat Aryeh on Yoma, which was printed for the first time in 1907, the Chafetz Chaim recalls in detail what had happened to the manuscript of the book, from the day it was delivered by "the great Gaon Rabbi Asher" in 1836 to the time it was given to him in 1907.
Rabbi Asher’s autographs are extremely rare. Most of them were lost and did not survive to the present day.
The great Gaon Rabbi Asher Lev Gunzburg-Wallerstein (1754-1837) the son and leading disciple of his father, the Sha’agas Aryeh. Was most talented, even as a child, so much so that his father said that his son was greater than him in the Torah. Since 1783 served as the Rav of Niederwerrn, since ca. 1785 as the Rav of Wallerstein, Bavaria and since 1809 until his passing as Av Beis Din of Karlsruhe. In addition to his Torah greatness, he was well acquainted with German, French and Italian literature.
