The Gett of Cleves polemic – in 1766, Yitzchak ben Eliezer Neiburg of Mannheim married Leah Gunzhoisen of Bonn. On the following Sabbath, the groom escaped to a nearby town with the dowry money. After he was found, the couple returned with the bride’s family to Bonn. There, the groom insisted he must travel to London and wishes to divorce his wife. The Gett was written in Cleves by Rabbi Yisroel Lifshitz; the groom returned the dowry money and left for England. The Gett was then contested by the rabbis of Frankfurt and Mannheim, who doubted the groom’s sanity. The fierce controversy surrounding the Kashrus of the Gett rocked the Rabbinic world of Europe, causing rifts between many rabbis and between varied communities.
