The Föhrenwald camp was established in 1945 on a site that was previously used as a forced labor camp. The camp was built by the government of the American Occupation Zone of Germany for housing refugees. Later, by the decision of the USA president, only Jewish refugees were housed there. In 1946, more than 4000 Jewish refugees lived in the camp and it became the third largest camp in the American Zone of Germany. This camp was the last one in Germany, closing down in 1957.
