Shulchan Aruch Harav, Hilchot Pesach – Shklov 1814 – the first volume of the first edition – dozens of handwritten glosses and textual corrections, some of them not printed – wide margins – incomplete copy
On leaves 7a and 13b there are two, relatively lengthy glosses that have not been printed. In addition, there are dozens of handwritten corrections of printing errors, most of which were corrected only in the new editions of Shulchan Aruch Harav published by Kehat, apparently based on Hagahot Maharil, author of Sherit Yehuda, the author’s brother.
The first edition was edited by the author’s brother, the Maharil, and Rabbi Mordechai Av Beis Din of Orsha (according to the foreword by the Mitteler Rebbe of section I of Orach Chaim).
Possibly, these glosses were copied from their glosses or corrections on the margins of the sheet. Especially wide margins.
The idea to write the Shulchan Aruch Harav was that of the Maggid of Mezeritch, the leading Rav of the holy Gaon Baal Hatanya, as recalled by the author’s sons in the foreword of this volume. When their father was living in Mezeritch, his holy Rav told him to write the book: "אין נבון וחכם כמוך לירד לעומקה של הלכה לעשות מלאכה זו מלאכת הקודש להוציא לאור תמצית ופנימיות טעמי ההלכות הנזכרים בכל דברי הראשונים והאחרונים זקוקים שבעתיים כל דבר על אופניו, בלי בלבול ותערובות, ופסק ההלכה המתברר ויוצא מדברי כל הפוסקים עד חכמי זמנינו".
Baal Hatanya did not manage to publish the Shulchan Aruch Harav in his lifetime. It was printed only after his passing (Tevet 1813) in Shklov and Kopust, during the years 1814 and 1816, in six sections. The first section, this volume – Hilchot Pesach (Simanim 429-494) was printed in Shklov in 1814. Later, the second section was printed – this volume which contains some of Hilchot Nidah, Shechita and Treifot and responsa by the author. The third section – Hilchot Ribit, Halachot compiled from Tur Choshen Mushpat and Hilchot Talmud Torah – was printed in Kopust in 1814. The three additional sections on Orach Chaim were printed later in Kopust, 1816.
