Sefer Likutei Amarim, Tanya – Shklov, 1806 – the second edition published by the author Baal Hatanya in his lifetime – first Edition of Ingeret Hatshuvah Mahadura Batra

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi published his book for the first time in Slavuta in 1797. This first edition contained only the first section – Sifran shel Beinonim – and the second one – 12 chapters of Sha’ar Hayichud Vehaemunah. 

Two separate volumes. 

Since Sefer Hatanya was available only in Reisin and not elsewhere, several other editions of the book were published in Zholkva, Galicia, without the author’s knowledge. In the Zholkva edition, the printers added, of their own accord, the Igeret Hatshuvah Mahadura Kama, whose copying appeared widely in manuscripts. 

This edition was published in Shklov by the author himself. For it, the author wrote, edited and re-proofread the entire Igeret Hatshuvah, as the printers describe in their foreword: "ומעט מזאת הכתיבה ואמירה נעימה יהיבה והובאה כבר בדפוס בספר של בינונים הנק’ בשם ליקוטי אמרי’ [בדפוסי זולקווא], ואת כל העודף הוברר כעת אוכל מתוך אוכל בשינוי לשון למעליותא ובתוספת ביאור באיזהו מקומן… ובהגהה מדוייקת להרים מכשולים וכל קמשונים, טעות סופרים שונים ומשונים, אשר נפלו בראשונים, והובא לבית הדפוס בתוספת הגהה".

 

In this copy, the section of Igeret Hatshuvah is bound in itself, separate from the rest of the book. 

The famed Chabadic Mashpi’ah Rashag Esterman (1853-1921) said that Ba’al Hatanya himself used to give the book to his Chassidim: "אשר מכירת התניא, או הנתינה, היה ע"י כ"ק רבינו בעצמו. וכשבאו משלחות מעיירות שונות, היה הוא בעצמו מעריך כמה [ספרי] תניא נחוץ לעיר זו…".

Leading Chassidic rabbis including the Ohev Yisroel of Apta, his in-law, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev, the Maggid of Kozhnitz and the Ahavas Yisroel of Vizhnitz all praise the book and some of them cite it in their books.
