Letter by Rabbi Josef Hirsch Geiger to Ezras Torah with a request for help and blessings to those assisting. Safed, [1940].
"The days of Passover, when the needs of Yisroel are great, are impending and my situation is dire having to support my two sons who are poor … I beg for the mercy of Ezras Torah to help me with the needs of the holy days of the festival" – letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Josef Hirsch Geiger and with his stamp. Safed, [1940].
[1] leaf, graph paper. Letter on a designed form with purple lettering. Printed on the top of the form is the title "אלקא דמאיר יעננו ביום קראנו" (Rabbi Meir’s G-d will respond on the day we call) and beneath it, an illustration of the tomb of Rabbi Meir Ba’al Hanes. Beneath it, a gate with verses praising charitable people.
Rabbi Josef Hirsch Geiger (1870-1944) of Safed, a Atinia-Vizhnitz Chassid, supervisor, secretary and scribe of Kollel Atinia. Was also an artist who was inspired by the popular Jewish painting tradition. Encouraged immigration and settlement in Safed as a member of the committee of the Bnei Zion organization. Published articles in varied newspapers under a pseudonym.
