Forgery! Interesting letter sent by the Shadar Rabbi Eliezer Yitzchak Gottlieb to the Rosh Av Beis Din of Jerusalem Rabbi Shmuel Salant about an imposter who is raising funds on his behalf abroad. Paris – 1900.
In the letter, Rabbi Eliezer Yitzchak Gottlieb – one of the leaders of the general Gmach of Jerusalem and the Meshamesh of Rabbi Moshe Yitzchak Goldschmidt, the head of Kollel Hod (Holland and Deutschland) – who was then a Shadar in Europe for the poor of Eretz Yisroel, informs that a Jew using the name Yitzchak Chalfan introduces himself as the grandson of the Rosh Av Beis Din Rabbi Shmuel Salant to European communities and raises funds for the Etz Chaim Yeshiva. To foster trust, that person presented the (stolen or forged) stamp of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. However, he once forgot it on his bed and it was found by his hosts, confirming the suspicion of Rabbi Eliezer Yitzchak, who knew the grandsons of the Rosh Av Beis Din (the stamp appears on the letter, as evidence). Toward the end of the letter, Rabbi Eliezer Yitzchak describes the imposter: "… he is of medium height, his hair is golden … his nose is long and thin".
Rabbi Yehuda Lutzki, one of the rabbis of Paris, added several words to the letter confirming what was written and warning the Rosh Av Beis Din not to allow the imposter to continue with his scam.
