Eight documents of loans taken by Maran the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Sholom Elyoshiv from free loan foundations in Jerusalem, signed by the Rebbetzin and the son, the Gaon Rabbi Moshe. Jerusalem, ca. 1963.
One document was handwritten by the activist Rabbi Menachem Porush and signed by the Rebbetzin Mrs. Chaya Elyoshiv; two other documents bear Maran the Gaon Rabbi Elyoshiv’s name and are signed by his son, the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Elyoshiv. The other documents are not signed.
Maran the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Sholom Elyoshiv was then marrying off his children. These documents indicate that, contrary to popular belief, what he earned as a Dayan of the Supreme Beis Din was not enough to support his children, especially when they were getting married.
This also indicates, from another perspective, the huge sacrifice he made when he resigned from his position as Dayan after the conversionד affairs of 1973.
The free loan foundations are foundations of the Goldstein, Safra and Biran families and more, which were managed by the Jerusalem activist Rabbi Menachem Porush, the deputy mayor of Jerusalem and Knesset member.
