In his youth, he lived on Komarno, where he was Melamed. Later, he moved to Berlin, where he taught Torah at the Beis Midrash of the philanthropist Rabbi Daniel Yaffe. In 1774 he was appointed Dayan on Lemberg and in 1781, Av Beis Din of Frankfurt on the Oder. Rabbeinu the Machatzit Hashekel, Rabbi Shmuel ben Rabbi Nosson Note Halevi Kelin (1724-1806) had thousands of disciples for sixty years at the Boskovich community, yet turned down Rabbinic offers from large and famed communities.
