‘מלחמת מצוה נגד החפשיים והציונים’ Lengthy and important letter handwritten by Rabbi Shmuel Hillel Shenker, the son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, to the holy Gaon Rabbi Yosef Zvi Dushinsky – when he was appointed Rav of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, 1933.

The important letter begins with words of praise for Rabbi Yosef Zvi Dushinsky who succeeded the great Gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld as the Rav of Jerusalem, the Eidah Chareidit and Agudas Yisroel. It then describes at length Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld’s struggles against the Zionists and non-religious Jews and his great successes as well as the happenings of Jerusalem and the old Yishuv during some dozens of years.

Rabbi Shmuel Hillel Shenker notes that he was Rabbi Yosef Chaim’s eldest and closest son-in-law and therefore, he and the family are very happy about the appointment of Rabbi Yosef Chaim’s successor – the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Zvi Dushinsky.

He also asks the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Zvi Dushinsky to appoint one of the members of the Sonneneld family, with an emphasis on Rabbi Shenker’s sons-in-law, as Rosh Av Beis Din of HaEidah HaChareidis.

It should be noted that Rabbi Shenker’s sons-in-law were indeed Gedolei Torah, the most renowned of them being the Gaon Rabbi Zvi Kupshitz.

Rabbi Shmuel Hillel Shenker [passed away in 1956], the son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. The son of Rabbi Avraham Manis of Kovno who was a disciple of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter.
