‘ההכרח לברוח מכאן לגמרי’ Historical letter handwritten by Maran the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Kanievsky from the time he lived in Pinsk and served as its Rosh Yeshiva, before he immigrated to the Holy land, about the difficult financial situation of the Yeshiva. Not dated.

In the letter, which was apparently written shortly before he immigrated to the Holy Land following his brother-in-law the Chazon Ish, the Kehilot Yaakov complains about the difficult situation of the Pinsk Yeshiva and requests that Vaad Hayeshivas in Vilna send some support.

The Steipler notes that if they do not send support now ‘מההכרח יהי’ לנסוע לווילנא או לברוח מכאן לגמרי. אילו ידעו מצבינו כמו שהוא, היו מתאמצים בכל כוחם להציל משפיכות דמים, והנה מגיע לערך שמונים דולר, ישלחו נא על כל פנים מחצה’

The Steipler ends his bleak letter with: ‘ומי שיאמר לעולמו די, יאמר לדוחק כל תופסי התורה וכל ישראל די.’ and then signs: ‘הכותב ומבקש וחוזר ומבקש יעקב ישראל קעניאווסקי’.

The Steipler served at the Pinsk Yeshiva during the years 1928-1933 and then immigrated to the Holy land.
