Dispute between Kollelim and Chassidic courts: draft of a letter by the heads of a Kollel Basarabia to Rabbi David Moshe of Chortkov about the "trespassing" of the holy Rav the Divrei Shmuel of Slonim who was collecting "Maot Eretz Yisroel" for the members of Kollel Reisin of Tiberius – ca. 1897.
This is a fascinating document, a draft of a lengthy letter (3 large pages) written by the leaders of Kollel Basarabia to Rabbi David Moshe of Chortkov. Much information about the collection of charity money for Eretz Yisroel can be deduced from the letter.
According to the letter, approx. a thousand people were members of Kollel Basarabia in Jerusalem, Safed and Tiberius. The letter claims that the money collected by the Divrei Shmuel for the Slonim Chassidim of Kollel Reisin is presumably at the expense of the poor of Kollel Basarabia.
(About this affair, see Rabbi Aharon Sorsky’s nook: Yessod Hamalah, I, pp. 359-363).
At the end of their letter, they ask the holy Rav of Chortkov to support them and order the Divrei Shmuel to collect money for the Slonim Chassidim of Kollel Reisin elsewhere.
