Historical letter signed by leading Rashei Yeshivos, in the time the Independent Education was established, Shevat, 1953.

The document is signed by the Geonim:

Rabbi Yechezkel Abramsky, author of Chazon Yechekel, Gaon Av Beis Din of London and the future chairman of Mo’etzes Gedolei HaTorah.

Rabbi Meir Karlitz, the eldest brother of Maran the Chazon Ish, Gaon Av Beis Din oכ Lechovich and the Rav of Pai.

Rabbi Yechezkel Sarna, the Rosh Yeshiva of Hebron.

Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, the Rosh Yeshiva of Mir.

In the document, they introduce their principles for independent traditional education based on discussions about the future of education in Israel.

Background:

In late 1952, the four educational streams established by Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion were canceled. The fourth stream was that of Agudas Yisroel. This stream was founded by Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Levin, the president of Agudas Yisroel, who led to it receiving governmental recognition and support.

Now that the streams were canceled, the future of their educational institutions was in danger. Extensive discussions were held by the leaders of Agudas Yisroel, educational activists, Rahshei Yeshivos and Tzaddikei Hador, varied suggestions were proposed and eventually, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Levin’s proposal was accepted according to which independent education shall be managed by educational activists of Agudas Yisroel alongside a board of directors, Gedolei Yisroel members of Mo’etzes Gedolei HaTorah. Independent education was a huge success and thousands of Jewish children grew up on Taharas Hakodesh.

This is one of the proposals of leading Lithuania Rashei Yeshivos which was sent to the leaders of Histadrut Poalei Agudas Yisroel.
