Historical letter by Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the rav of Jerusalem, with his handwritten signature, describing the famed Masa Hamoshavot (journey through the colonies). Jaffa, 1897.
The letter was sent to Mr. Eliyahu Zeev Levin Epstein, the founder of the Moshava Rechovot near Rishon LeZion and the head of its educational committee. In it, the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant apologizes for the delay in his visit to Rechovot.
He describes where he had been in recent days, his visit to Petach Tikvah and his delight at its residents and the impressive synagogue that is being built.
Rabbi Salant recalls that the dirt of the road hurt his eyes and he therefore is incapable of continuing his blessed journey. He explains that washing in the sea twice a day helps him and if he travels to the faraway Rechovot he will be forced to miss these washings.
He sends his regards and blessings to all residents of the Moshava and especially to his friend the clerk Mr. Goldin.
With his handwritten signature and stamp. Torn filing perforations, affecting some words. Fold lines. Small tears. Good condition.
