From the archives of the "Chazon Ish" – with a name to pray for, written in his holy handwriting.
Before us are dozens of letters, ‘Kvittlech’ and receipts received by the "Chazon Ish" from all ends of the spectrum, starting with Rabbis and immense Talmidei Chachamim, to businessmen and even troublemakers and eccentrics.
The Chazon Ish kept and treasured everything that he received, and did not allow the large amounts of mail that were received by him daily to be thrown away or destroyed. This is told in the book "Ma’aseh Ish", vol. 1, p. 198: His desk was piled with many notes (Kvittlech) and letters, in which Jews poured out their bitter tales. Rabeinu kept all those notes in the attic of his house for many years. One of his household members who asked for his permission to remove them from his house, was answered in the negative, as he said: ‘The Yid who wrote the note, worked hard on his writing… after all, these are his pains that he writes here… and how can such a note be thrown away’. By the way, in the fullness of time, when our Rebbe left us to go to his everlasting home, it was necessary to remove his belongings from his apartment, Rabbi Shmariahu Greiniman zt’l took those sacks of notes and buried them in a safe place.”
The collection before us contains letters in Torah and halachic inquiries from many important people, including Rabbi Shlomo Sobel, Rabbi Moshe Rozin and his son Rabbi Chaim, Rabbi Eliyahu Meir Kovner, head of the Porat Yosef Yeshiva in Rehovot (regarding help in building the yeshiva), Rabbi Yechiel Michal Tykochinsky, Rabbi Nachman Shmuel Yaakov of Yodser (among the first Rabbonim of Bnei Berak), Rabbi Mordechai Volkovsky, and more.
In the collection there is also a letter of request from the ‘Otzar Hasforim’ (library) of the Hebron Yeshiva to send them his pamphlet regarding 18 hours. Also in the collection are receipts from various Torah institutions for sums of money, donations sent to them by the Chazon Ish.
