The personal copy of Rabbi Yom Tov Tzahalon (the second) and of Rabbi Binyomin Baskovich author of Seder Mishnah – the son of the Machatzit Hashekel.
8, 140 pp. 20 cm. With the stamp of the Beis Midrash of Rabbi Gershon and his son Rabbi S. Baskovitch in Oben Yashan [Óbuda, one of the three towns forming Budapest]. And with owner’s signatures of ‘The small Wolf Halevi Baskovich’ and ‘the young Moshe Ye’uda Abas’. Two additional notations in Sephardic script on the margins, trimmed at the edge of the line: "מה שקנה עב[ד] לשם רבו… [יום טוב] [צהלון]". With a stamp of Rabbi Yosef Saso Halevi of Istanbul.
Rabbi Yom Tov Tzahalon (the second) ben Rabbi Akiva – the grandson of the Maharitz, Rabbi Yom Tov Tzahalon (the first) ben Rabbi Moshe. Was sent as an emissary of Tzfas to Western Europe and lived for many years in Egypt. Published his grandfather’s Sefer in Italy. In his old age, he immigrated to Jerusalem and served as a Dayan of the Beis Din of Rabbi Moshe ibn Chaviv, until his passing in 1697. Left behind manuscripts with responses and Chiddushim on Shas.
Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Abas (ca. 1601-ca. 1671) – one of the leading sages of Egypt, Rosh Yeshiva, Posek and Poet who lived in 17th century Rashid (today, western Alexandria). Author of ‘Teshuvot Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Abas’ (Jerusalem, 2021). left behind manuscripts of poems, prose, and a compendium ‘Kise Kavod’ on the small tractates. Was a disciple of Rabbi Mordechai Kalai and the Maharit and as indicated by the notations in this book, he was also a disciple of Rabbi Yom Tov Tzahalon (the second).
Rabbi Binyomin Zeev Wolf Halevi Baskovich (1740-1818) author of ‘Seder Mishnah’, ‘Mamar Esther’ and more. The son of Baal Machatzit Hashekel, Rabbi Shmuel Halevi of Kelin. Was a Gaon, famed author, Posek, Rav and Ram in Alt-Ofen from 1769. From 1782 he served as Rav of Assad (Hungary), Prostitz (Moravia), Alt-Ofen, Pest, Yarmot, Kollin (Bohemia) and Bonyhad (Hungary). The Noda BiYehuda, Rabbi Akiva Eiger and the Chasam Sofer wrote about him with appreciation. See: ‘Sefer Mekorot Lekorot Yisrael’, pp. 21-25.
