“May Hashem help me, for the sake of the honor of His name, that I not misstep in matters of Halacha” – a Halachic responsum regarding the severe issues of releasing an Aguna, handwritten and signed in the holy hand of Maran, the Pillar of Ruling, Rabbi Shmuel Engel, author of ‘Responsa Maharash’.
The responsum is in the handwriting of Rabbi Engel and signed by him. The actual discussion begins at about the middle of the reply. We have here a total of 29 lines, all in his distinct and clear handwriting.
THe subject is a woman from Gorlitz, discussing the details of her Aguna status and how it may be lifted.
In the body of the responsum, his comments and additions regarding a Halachic ruling, after which he begins a new topic: “I will copy here what I responded, with the help of Hashem, to the great and knowledgeable Rabbis, Rabbi Yaakov Berenstein and Rabbi Yaakov Gottwirth of Tarna.”
But there he stops, and the actual response isn’t written.
