From the bibliothèque of Maran the Chida: Sefer Maginei Shlomo, by Rabbi Yehoshua Av Beis Din of Krakow – Venice 1741 – the holy signature of the Chida.
On the title page shines the holy signature of Rabbeinu Chaim Yosef David Azulai – the Chida.
The content of the Sefer is an explanation of Rashi’s methodology and a refutation of the various questions raised by the Tosafot so as to “protect” him from their questions. That is the source of the name “Maginei Shlomo” – Protectors of Shlomo.
The publisher, a grandson of the author, tells a wonderous story in the preface: “Know ye that the Gaon, my grandfather OBM, told to his students while he still lived that the Gaon Rashi OBM came to him and showed him his visage with great joy and told him thus: ‘You are glad in this world and it is good for you in the next world, for delivering me from the mouths of the mighty and sharp lions, the authors of Tosafot. I shall greet you when you arrive in the world to come with all my disciples.’ And this indeed happened, for about a half an hour before his passing, while being visited by the Gedolim of Krakow, he said to them: ‘Make way, for our master who lights our way, Rabeinu Shlomo Yitzchaki, Rashi OBM, has come to me together with all his holy followers, and has greeted us in joy to show me the path of life, for I have always stood by him to refute the questions of the Tosafot on Rashi.’”
The Chida, in his Sefer “Shem HaGedolim” briefly notes this story – based on what he read in the preface to this Sefer. He also notes that the author was a disciple of the Sefer Meiras Eynayim, the teacher of the Shach and grandfather of the “Pnei Yehoshua”.
