Halachic ruling regarding division of the “Cantorial Privilege” among the sages of Izmir. Signed by the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Navarro, author of “Pnei Mevin”. Izmir, 1828.
A deed describing the division of the privilege to serve as cantor in the “Bikkur Cholim” congregation in Izmir among the cantors, who were from the Geonim of Izmir: Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi, Rabbi Yosef Ibn Ezra, and Rabbi Avraham HaKohen Ariyash. Undersigned with the holy hand of the Gaon Rabbi Bechor Yitzchak Navarro.
The deed mentions that Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi inherited the cantorial privilege from his father, Rabbi Refael Ashkenazi. However, to prevent contention, he absolved himself of some of that privilege in favor of the congregation’s cantors, Rabbi Yosef Ibn Ezra and Rabbi Avraham HaKohen Ariyash. This absolution took place in front of Rabbi Yitzchak Navarro and the nobleman Rabbi Micardo Refael Avraham Bonomo. After the absolution, Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi retained only nine days a year.
