Shut Mayim Chaim, by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Hacohen Rappaport Av Beis Din of Ostrohe – Zhytomyr, 1857-1858 – first edition – with the famed Response by the Baal Shem Tov Hakadosh – with approbations by leading Chassidic rabbis the Rav of Apta, the Rav of Chernobyl and the Sar Sholom of Belz.
Incomplete copy.
Printed on leaf 25b is a question that was sent from Mezhibuzh to Rabbi Meir Av Beis Din of Constantine (the son of Rabbi Yaakov Emden, who was the father of the author’s mother). A question about סירכא בריאה was rendered Kosher by the local Moreh Tzeddek; his Psak, however, was questioned by some of the leaders of the community. The question letter was signed, among others, by "ישראל בע"ש [=בעל שם] מטליסט" – Maran the Baal Shem Tov. Rabbi Meir’s lengthy response justifies their doubt and objects to the Psak of the Moreh Tzeddek of Mezhibuzh. The response begins with several lines praising the Baal Shem Tov: אלוף ביהודה ובישראל עושה חיל… ממציא מזור ותרף… הרב המופלג המפורסים בש"ט [=בשם טוב] מוה’ ישראל נר"ו…"
The two sections of the book are bound together in a single volume: section I on Orach Chaim and Yoreh Deah and section II on Even HaEzer and Choshen Mishpat.
Printed at the end of section II is the Otzrot Chaim Kuntres with Chidushei Aggadah and Pilpulim by the author and his son, the publisher.
