Rabbi Shaul Lowenstam of Amsterdam (1717–1790). Av Beis Din of Rzeszów, Dubna, and later of the Ashkenazic community in Amsterdam. From the giants of his generation – the generation of the Pnei Yehushua, the Noda Bi’yehuda, and more. The Chida stayed in his home when he was in Amsterdam on one of his many journeys, and writes about him: “And I, the poor one, merited to greet the Shechina in the year 1778, when I passed on a mission of Mitzvah, and merited to bask in his learning and humility and completeness” (Shem HaGedolim, Seforim sec. B). This meeting tokk place in the year this Sefer was published.
