Rabbi Yaakov Castro (1525–1612) – AKA Maharikash, from the leading rabbis of Egypt in the generation following the Spanish expulsion. Born in Egypt and moved to Eretz Yisrael in his youth, to study under Rabbi Levi be Chaviv (the Ralbach) and Rabbi David be Zimra (the Radbaz). Served as Rabbi of the Musta’arabi Jews in Cairo, as a Dayan and Rosh Yeshiva. Conversed in Halacha with the Gedolim of his generation until he became known as one of the great Poskim and as the Chief Rabbi of Egypt. In 1570 he visited Eretz Yisrael and was a guest of Maran Rabbi Yosef Karo in Tzfas. Authored ‘Erech Lechem’ on the Shulchan Aruch, responsa ‘Oholei Yaakov’ and Chiddushim on several tractates.
