Rabbi David Pardo (1719–1790) form the leading Poskim of Spain. Born in Venice to a venerable family, descendants of Rabbi Yitzchak Abohav. Orphaned in his youth, and lost his entire inheritance. Due to this he was forced to migrate to Esperalto (today Split, Croatia) where he tried to make a living as a teacher for young children. When his greatness and piety became known, he began to serve in various Rabbinical positions. He later even established a Yeshiva in the city, where many of the generation’s sages, such as Rabbi Avraham Peniso and Rabbi Shabtai David Ventura, were students. In 1761 he traveled to the great city of Belgrad, and began serving in the Rabbinate there. Rabbi David used to travel to Livorno in order to print his many publications, and there, in 1775, he met the Gaon, the Chida, a meeting that developed into a steadfast friendship, leading to a marriage between their children. Rabbi David was also friends with the Maharit Algazi.
Authored many important Seforim, amongst them: Chasdei David on tosefta, Maskil LeDavid on Rashi’s commentary on Torah, Shoshanim LeDavid, and more.
