Handwritten letter, in the holy handwriting of Maran, the immense Gaon, Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman, Rosh Yeshiva of Baranowicz, regarding the Yeshiva’s dire straits, with a full detailing of the expenses and a passionate plea: ‘Based on our current situation, our lives are at stake’.
In the letter, which was sent to Va’ad Hayeshivos in Vilna, Rabbi Wasserman informs them of the minimum amount he requires to cover the Yeshiva’s immediate expenses.
Among the expenses are 1200 Zloty for construction of storage for the wood needed to heat the Yeshiva and fuel the kitchen and more. His minimum total is 2650 Zloty (worth ~$9500 in today’s money)
“The known rule in construction is that in actuality one must add a quarter or a third to what has been set in advance”, meaning it is known that construction costs tend to increase by 25% or more.
At the end he writes of the current situation, “our lives are at risk daily”, and also inquires after the name and address of one of the philanthropists who resides in Australia.
The letter carries the date “Sunday Pinchas, Baranowicz”, also in his handwriting.
