Outcry of the teachers in Talmud Torah Kamenitz in Lithuania to Maran the immense Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer of Vilna. March, 1928.
In the document, signed by the leading Melamdim in Kamenitz, they beg Maran, saying that in the past 5 years – since 1923 – a Cheder is running in their town and its situation is dire.
“Even those who do not have the talents to rise high in Torah learning receive an orthodox education so that they should remain faithful Jews. In order to enhance this illustrious institute and make it attractive to the parents, so that they do not send their children to graze in foreign pastures, we have hired excellent teachers there, to teach Gemara and Tanach, as well as secular studies – and all is taught here in pure holiness”.
The writers complain that since Va’ad Hayeshivos began their considerable collections, it has come at the expense of the local Talmud Torah, and they request and demand that 20% of the amount be given by Va’ad Hayeshivos to the local school.
