The ‘Kollel America’ controversy. A letter from the Chacham Bashi, Chaim Nachum Effendi, to the Master of Yerushalayim, the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant, asking that he assist in transferring the funds to the members of Kollel America “Tiferes Yerushalayim”. Constantinople, 1908.
“For they are pressed and oppressed by the General Committee, who will not care or have mercy on them, and they are suffering hunger, seeking sustenance… and they will not give them the third of the income as per the conditions agreed upon during the compromise, and that is the opposite of the laws of truth and what is right…” The Chacham Bashi, Rabbi Chaim Nachum requesting from Rabbi Shmuel Salant to care for the members of Kollel America, who are suffering due to the persecution of the General Committee, who hold back their share of the funds collected abroad.
