Sefer ‘Ma’alos HaMidos’ by Rabbi Yechiel ben Rav Yekutiel ben Rav Yechiel the Doctor of the humble family. Offenbach, 1716. Second edition – first time this fundamental Mussar Sefer was printed bearing its well-known name.
This exemplar contains the rare illustration at the end, which does not exist in the few other surviving exemplars of this edition.
The important Sefer ‘Ma’alos HaMidos’, from the most important Seforim on Mussar and Middos, which had been written by one of the Rishonim, Rabbi Yechiel ben Rav Yekutiel ben Rav Yechiel the Doctor of the humble family, also famous for having transcribed, for the first time, the entire Talmud Yerushalmi in the Leiden Manuscript, and known also for his work “Tanya Rabati’.
This Sefer was extremely beloved by our previous Gedolim, such as the Yaavetz, the Chida and futher on through the generations, and has been reprinted many times.
It was first printed in Cremona in 1556, however it was then called ‘Beis HaMIdos’. In this Offenbach, 1716 publication it was renamed to ‘Ma’alos HamIdos’, as stated on the title page. Thus there are those who considrer this to be the ‘first edition’. However the contents are perfectly identical to those of ‘Beis Midos’.
