Letter in Torah handwritten by Maran the Gaon the ‘Shevet Sofer’ of Pressburg to the famous Gaon Rabbi Akivah Yosef Schlesinger, author of ‘Lev Ha’Ivri’. From the ‘Shevet Sofer’s younger years, in his father, the ‘Ksav Sofer’s lifetime. Pressburg, 1861.
Maran the holy Rebbe of Tzanz once referred to the ‘Shevet Sofer’ saying: “In all of Galicia we do not have such a scholar so young”.
At the conclusion of the letter, the ‘Shevet Sofer’ writes in respect and longing: “I await hes exalted reply, and if I have been mistaken, please let me know”.
Although the letter is partially torn, and the recipient’s name is missing, at the end of the letter are regards to ‘his father-in-law, the great Gaon etc. Rabbi Hillel”. It refers to the great Gaon Rabbi Hillel Lichtenstein of Krasna. There is also a single ending “ף’ left, so it is fairly certain that the letter was sent to his great friend and colleague Rabbi Akivah Yosef Schlesinger, before his emigration to Yerushalayim.
Please see the Hebrew listing for biographical information on the ‘Shevet Sofer’.
