Discovery! The holy handwriting of Rabbi Yosef Tzarfati of Adrianople, author of the famous “Yad Yosef” – a Drush for Simcha Torah and Parshat Vezos Habracha, in a different version than that which is printed in the Sefer – Six pages in his holy handwriting – Adrianople (Turkey), early 17th century – pre 1616 – “Rashi” script.
Six pages in the holy handwriting of the famous orator, Rabbi Yosef Tzarfati, from the great sages of Adrianople. The majority of this sermon was printed by the author in his sefer ‘Yad Yosef’ (Venice 1616) in a sermon for Simchat Torah and Parshas Vezos Habracha.
The manuscript was apparently written shortly after being delivered, as the author writes in the preface to his Sefer: “And immediately I would put pen to paper to write everything which came out of my mouth”, and retains expressions that are more consistent with a live speech than that of a printed item.
The “Yad Yosef” was printed in Venice, 1616 by the author himself, and was reprinted in 1700 in Amsterdam. One of the enthusiastic approbations for the Amsterdam edition mentions the rarity of the original version at the time: “Today it is literally impossible to find even one in a city or two by a family, for the first ones have worn out and became so decrepit that even the remnants do not exist…It is a Sefer that is beloved by students of the Torah.”
