Manuscript. Copies of letters from the end of the 17th century dealing with the first Rabbinical position of the famous Gaon Rabbi David Oppenheim, Av Beis Din of Nikolsburg and Prague, author of the Responsa “Nish’al David” – Copies made in late 1800s – valuable information that has not seen the light of day. Copied from the 17th century diary of the Nikolsburg community.
This volume has copies of dozens of ancient letters revolving around the appointment of Rabbi David Oppenheim to his first Rabbinical position in Nikolsburg, where he served during the years 1689-1709. Neat, handsome scribe’s handwriting.
The letters were first copied in 1695 by the community scribe, Reb Mordechai son of Menachem of Leipnik, who was the scribe for the communities in Moravia. This copy was made based on that copy, in the late 1800’s to be used in the researches of the collector and researcher Dr. David Kaufman (1852-1899).
The collection contains both letters sent by Rabbi David Oppenheim as well as letters sent to him, including a letter sent from his distinct Rebbe, Rabbi Gershon Ashkenazi of Metz, author of ‘Avodas Hagershoni”.
The title page states: “Sefer ‘writings of truthful words’ … by the writer Mordechai, son of Rabbi Menachem who is called Menky Shlita, of Leipnik. Written here in the holy community of Nikolsburg…” and an acrostic that adds up to 455 – 1695.
Some pages contain comments in Dr. Kaufman’s handwriting.
