The fight against conscription of Jewish girls. Sharp letter from Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank OBM, Av Beis Din of Yerushalayim, 1950.
Extremely sharp and pain-laden letter, sent to “the honorable heads of the multitudes of Israel, representatives of Orthodox Judaism in Eretz Yisrael, the great Rabbis Shlita, the honorable sirs, leaders and ministers of the State, and Members of Parliament, and the United Orthodox Front Party”.
In his letter he writes:
“Relying on the commandment ‘and thy camp shall be holy’, I find myself obligated to defend the honor of Israel, and thus I request from his honor to clarify to me the content of the decision to release the orthodox girls, is this exemption a complete one or is it simply a temporary smokescreen?”
Further on the Rav refers to the issue of the girls’ declarations (regarding being orthodox) in the courts, as there is a complaint regarding the attitude of the clerks in these offices,
“And why have you not insisted unequivocally that these declarations be handled by the bureaus of the Israel Rabbinate?"
