Unique and interesting letter, handwritten by Maran, the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Pillar of Ruling and Posek Hador, sent to Rabbi Yehuda Zerachya Segal of Tel Aviv, 1965.

An interesting note is that Maran Rabbi Elyashiv mistakenly addresses the letter to “the Gaon Rabbi shefatya”, referring to Rabbi Zerachya’s father, who had passed away ten years prior to this.

In his letter he explains and expounds that he has absolutely no power to change the decisions of the Rabbi Selection Committee. He explains that all the tests are conducted based on clear, preset rules of the Chief Rabbinate Council.
Rav Elyashiv promises to speak to Rabbi Unterman (the then Chief Rabbi), but doubts that this will have any success.

It appears that Rabbi Segal attempted to receive certification for the position of a City Rabbi, but was disqualified during the test.

[1] official letterhead of Rabbi Elyashiv ‘Member of the Great Beis Din’. Total of 12 lines. Stains and light fold marks. Good condition.
