Interesting postcard from the Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Morder of Dzików, from the sages of Galicia, who dealt in publishing ancient manuscripts – a threat of a lawsuit sent to the famous Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Feigenboim, Av Beis Din of Warsaw – Jarosław, March, 1897.

The postcard relates to the publishing of the manuscript of Sefer ‘Malbushei Yom Tov’ by Rabbi Tom Tov Lipman Heller, the “Tosfot Yom Tov”.

The sender, the venerable Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Morder of Dzzków was an extremely impoverished person, who earned his living by brokering old manuscripts and having the published. Amongst the works he handled was the manuscript of ‘Malbushei Yom Tov’, written by the ‘Tosfot Yom Tov’, which he sent to the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Feigenboim, the Av Beis Din of Warsaw and a descendant of the ‘Tosfot Yom Tov’, so that he should edit and publish it. This Sefer was, indeed, published for the first time by Rabbi Feigenboim’s sons, in two volumes, during 1895-97 (see more in detail in the preface and approbations to the Sefer).

In this postcard, Rabbi Morder expresses his annoyance with Rabbi Feigenboim for not having returned the manuscript, and he begs him to either send it back or pay for it in full. Should he fail to do so, then Rabbi Morder will summon him to a Din Torah. He writes to Rabbi Feigenboim in a distinct Galician manner, that “and if not, do not let it go lightly, for I will, Bli Neder, heap expenses on him in multitudes, and he will repay me everything and much more…”
