The printer, Rabbi Yisroel Bak, emigrated to Safed from Berditchev (Ukraine) in 1832 and founded a Hebrew printing house that provided livelihood for scores of families. Two years later, during the Syrian Peasant Revolt, the print was destroyed. It was rebuilt, only to be destroyed again in the earthquake of 1837 that destroyed most of the city. Subsequently, Rabbi Yisroel Bak moved to Jerusalem and, in 1841, with the help of Sir Moses Montefiore who donated the press itself, built the first Jewish printing house in Jerusalem.

Without covers. Moth holes, stains. One of the two title pages of part 1 is missing. Damaged spine on part 1 so that the first 2 pp. and last pg. are detached, and the entire volume is split in two. Fair condition.
