A letter that was sent from the house of the Chofetz Chaim by Maran the great Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Bonem Wasserman, the Rosh Yeshiva of Baranowitz, to Va’ad Hayeshivos in Vilna. Radin, 1931.

In the letter, he expresses his concern for each and every yeshiva student in Lithuania. The letter was written during Asseres Yemei Teshuva, when the Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Bonem Wasserman was staying at the house of his leading teacher and Rav, Maran the Chofetz Chaim in Radin.

The letter was sent to the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Berg, one of the leaders of Va’ad Hayeshivos and a confidante of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky of Vilna, about the student Mr. Zecharya Gittelman of  Trochenbrod-Vohlin in Lithuania. Rabbi Elchonon writes that the student came to the Chofetz Chaim Yeshiva in Radin, however, the managers of the yeshiva would not accept him unless they received confirmation from Va’ad Hayeshivos. Therefore, he pleads to be sent such a confirmation ‘from Va’ad Hayeshivos that he can be accepted…‘.

Rabbi Elchonon ends this part of the letter: ‘המברכו ואת כל ב"ב בגמר חתימה טובה בחיים ושלום’.

On the margins of the letter, Rabbi Elchonon added five lines in which he asks to visit Va’ad Hayeshivos when the rabbis – the Gaon Rabbi Chizkiyahu Yosef Mishkovsky, the Mashgi’ach Rabbi Leib Chasman or the Gaon Rabbi Yechiel Michl Rabinowitz – are present.

Rabbi Elchonon notes at the beginning of his letter that it was written in Radin and the addressees added the name ‘Baranowitz’ to note from whom it was sent.

On vesro, the address of Va’ad Hayeshivos in Vilna and the address of the sender: Rabbi Kagan, the Rav of Radin, on whose behalf Rabbi Wasserman of Radin writes. Slightly torn filing perforations.
