The holy Rebbe, Rabbi Elazar Menachem Mendel Biderman of Lelov (1827-1883), son of the holy Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe of Lelov. Emigrated from Poland to Eretz Yisrael with his father in 1851. Scant weeks after they arrived there, his father passed away and Rabbi Elazar Mendel was crowned as his successor. Stood in the leadership of the Chassidic Yishuv in Yerushalayim. He became famous and known as a miracle and salvation worker, and as a holy man of G-D on whom Ruach Hakodesh rested openly. Was admired by the Tzaddikim of his generation, both Chassidim and Misnagdim. The “Tiferes Shlomo” of Radomsk sent him Kvittlech, and the “Divrei Chaim” of Tzanz said of him once, during the Sederr, that “The Seder that Rabbi Elazar Mendel is setting now in Yerushalayim is nicer than all the Sedarim of all the Tzaddikim”. Was known for his lengthy, daily davening at the Kosel.
It is told of Rabbi Elazar Mendel that one time, when he was traveling to Chevron to daven at the Me’aras Hamachpela, the Arab donkey driver started joking at his expense.
“The Rebbe immediately took out a small Tehillim from his pocket and began to say Mizmorim from it. As soon as the Rebbe started saying Tehillim, the Arab donkey driver began shaking and shrieking dreadfully from the sudden pains that came upon him, and kept getting worse”. Only when the Arab promised that he would never poke fun at another Jew did these tortuous agonies leave him,
“From then on, the Arab donkey drivers would become dreadfully fearful whenever they saw the Rebbe open his Tehillim, and do not stop promising that they will never harm a Jew” (Rabbi Moshe Yair Weinstock, ‘Tiferes Beis David’, p. 28).
His son, the holy Admor Rabbi Avraham Betzalel Nosson Nota of Sosnovich (1862-1933 – Ency. For Chassidus, I, p. 214). Moved from Yerushalayim to Poland at the beginning of WWI and settled in Sosnovich (Sosnowiec), where he became known as a miracle worker. Eighteen months after his passing, on the 2nd of Kislev 5695 (Nov. 9, 1934), his casket was brought from Poland to be buried in Har Hazeisim. The members of the Chevra Kadisha testified that his body was complete and untouched as on the day he passed away.
