‘Sefer “Tzava’as HaRiva”sh VeHanhagos Yesharos”… as printed in Levov… 1743’ – rare edition of Sefer “Tzava’as HaBaal Shem Tov” which was printed in one of the printhouses in Russia or Poland ca. late 1700’s-early 1800’s – almost never seen in auctions.
Sefer “Tzava’as HaRiva”sh” was one of the earliest Chassidic Seforim which were printed in the late 1700’s. This pamphlet contains the instructions of the Ba’al Shem Tov OBM regarding Dveikus and Avodas Hashem, per his teachings.
The words of the Ba’al HaTanya regarding the name of the Sefer are known: “In truth this is not his Will, and he did not instruct anything before his passing, but these are a collection of his pure teachings which were assembled from collections, and they did not know how to properly match the language… The Ba’al Shem Tov OBM used to say Divrei Torah in Yiddish and not in Loshon HaKodesh”.
The Sefer was an eyesore to the Misnagdim, and it was publicly burned in Vilna, as told in the letters of the Ba’al HaTanya. In “Iggeres Hakodesh” printed at the end of the Tanya is one long letter which explains in detail the depth of the Ba’al Shem Tov’s meaning in one single paragraph of the Sefer. At the end of this letter, the Ba’al HaTanya writes: “Here you see the explanation of one Ma’amar from the known Seforim, as an example and a sign that all of the enigmatic Ma’amarim have a clear and complete explanation by those who know the Hidden Wisdom”.
