On the title page is the stamp of the Tiferes Shlomo of Radomsk: “Shlomo Hakohen Av Beis Din of cong. Radomsk”.
The holy Gaon, taddik Yesod Olam, Rabbeinu Shlomo Hakohen Rabinowitz, Av Beis Din of Radomsk, author of “TiferesShlomo” (1800/1803-1865), was one of the great luminaries of Chassidus in Poland. From youth he spent his time in the shade of the Chassidic giants of Poland: Rabbi Fishel of Strikov, Rabbi Meir of Apt – the Or Lashamayim, Rabbi Yeshaya of Przedbórz, and Rabbi Yisachar Ber of Radoshitz. Was appointed Rav of Radomsk, Poland in Adar of 1834, and served there for thirty-two years, until his passing. In the mid-1800s, after several of the leading Gedolim of Poland passed away, multitudes began to stream to him to receive his teachings. His leadership took the form of firmness and grandeur. He was renowned for his lofty levels in terms of holiness and asceticism, and he spoke often regarding Shmiras Habris. Additionally, he was known for his originality of thought, his immense shrewdness, and his sharp mind. His sharp sayings became famous among the Chassidim in Poland. Some of the most eminent Rabbonim of Poland came to study from him. Among his disciples was the German researcher and author R’ Aharon Marcus, author of the book “The Chassidus”, who spent time with him during the last four years of his life, as well as the Doctor, the Admor, the Ba’al Teshuva Rabbi Chaim David Bernhard.
His Sefer “Tiferes Shlomo”, which was printed in two volumes after his passing, is one of the foundational Seforim of the teachings of Chassidus. The Sefer was accepted with admiration and love by all the great Tzaddikim. The holy Rebbe, the “Divrei Chaim” of Tzanz, wrote in his approbation to the Sefer that
“will be a benefit to the world, and especially to those of faithful spirit who follow the path of Chassidus, for his words are pleasurable”. The holy Rabbi Mendel of Vorka said of this Sefer:
“I have seen in this Sefer three new things, which had the holy Rabbi, the author, not revealed to us, we would not know them until the coming of Moshiach.”
His disciple, R’ Aharon Marcus, dedicated an entire chapter in his book (printed in German in 1901) to describing the personage who was his distinct Rabbi, the Tiferes Shlomo. Amongst his descriptions, he writes:
“It is simply impossible to describe in writing the immense impression Rabbeinu had on me… even a slight comprehending of his holy visage and his shining countenance…Admor Z”L’s power of attraction was immense… When Admor Z”L looked at a person, even without speaking one word with him, he immediately knew the substance of that person and his deeds, as though looking into a clear glass cup…completely stripped of any physical aspects and only dealt in the spiritual…He was one of the last miracle workers in his area, about whom wonderous and incomprehensible things are told.”
Here is a place to note that in the Sefer Tiferes Shlomo, there is absolutely no mention of any sayings or quotes from the Ba’al HaTanya, and R’ Aharon Marcus even writes clearly: “as a distinct Kabbalist in his own rights, he did not deal with the Seforim of Chabad” (Sefer Hachassidus, p. 252). However, from this exemplar, it appears that he only had criticism regarding the Chabad Chassidus Seforim, but not on the ones of Halacha.
