The holy Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Ḥagiz (1620-1674) was the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Beis Yaakov in Yerushalayim. Born in Fes, Morocco, from where he emigrated to Italy. Arriving in Yerushalayim in 1658, he established his famous Yeshiva, where, over the years, many of the giants of the generations studies. Amongst those: his son-in-law Maharam Ḥaviv, the “Pri Chadash”, and more. In Yerushalayim he became the son-in-law of the Rishon Letziyon, Rabbi Moshe Galanti (the “Magen”). Was one of the first to decry and fight against the false Messiah, Shabtai Tzvi. Authored many works (only a few of which were printed), the most famous of which are “Eitz Chayim” on the Mishna, responsa “Halachot Ketanot” and “Orach Mishor”. Was the father of the famous Gaon Rabbi Moshe Ḥagiz.
