Sefer ‘Mizmor LeTodah’, by Rabbi Shmuel Aripol. Prague, 1610. Second edition. Rare.

‘Mizmor LeTodah’, on Tehillim Ch. 119-134, by Rabbi Shmuel, son of Rabbi Yitzchak Aripol. Moshe Katz press, Prague, 1610. Second and rare edition.

On the title page are several signatures, including: “the y. Aryeh son of R’ Moshe Feituch…”, “the y. Tzvi Hirsch son of R’ Avraham”, and more. Inside the Sefer are stamps of Yosef ben Aharon, Dr. Chazanowitz..

Decorated title page with illustrations of lions, Moshe Rabbeinu with the Luchos, Kohen’s hands, angels, and a Magen David.

The Magen David symbol became a distinctly Jewish symbol in Prague, about the same time as the printing of this Sefer, and began to be used to identify Jews in illustrations. Approx. 25 years later, during the 30-Year War, after the Jewish population of Prague excelled at defending the city from the Swedish invaders, the Emperor Ferdinand the III presented the Jewish community with a red flag, with a Magen David and the words “Shma Yisrael” embroidered on it in gold, as a token of appreciation. This flag was hung on a flagpole in the Altnoishul in Prague, and the Magen David became the official symbol of the Prague community, going on to become a symbol for many other segments of the nation.

Dr. Yosef ben Aharon Chazanowitz (1844-1919) – Doctor and bibliophile from Bialystok. One of the leaders of the “Chovevei Tzion” movement and from the founders of the “National Library” in Jerusalem. See more about him in the monograph “Dr. Yosef Chazanowitz” by D. Clementinowsky (NY, 1956).
