Two-part Talmud Yerushalmi on Seder Kodashim, with the commentary of the forging publisher Shlomo Ye’uda S”T, i.e. Shlomo Friedlander, including the picture of the alleged ‘manuscript’.
Part one includes tractates Zevachim and Erchin and a correction page for “printing errors”. Part two on Chulin and Bechorot, including commentary of the Maharsham on Bechorot.
On the reverse of the title page is a notation: “I purchased in Kiev in the month of Tevet, year ‘670 (1910), its price with the binding ten silver Rubles: Baruch Essman”.
The forged Yerushalmi was first published in the winter of 1907 – after many years of fruitless searching for the fabled Yerushalmi on Kodashim.
Many of the Gedolim of the time actually believed that this was authentic, and were greatly joyous at the “find”. However others, such as the Rogochover Gaon – Rabbi Yosef Rosin of Dvinsk, Maran the ‘Imrei Emes’ of Ger, and the holy Gaon, author of ‘Kli Chemda’ – Rabbi Meir Dan Plotzky of Warta, who came out against the Sefer and fought publically against it.
The polemic continued in earnest for several years, with various publications coming out – both supporting and opposing ones – especially from the forger himself, who also forged the supporting publications. After some time, it became widely accepted that this Yerushalmi was, indeed, a forgery, and most copies were buried and hidden.
Over the years, the existing exemplars became highly sought-after and rare.
