Within the Sefer are four short glosses and error corrections in the holy handwriting of Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov.
An expert’s affidavit is enclosed.
The holy Gaon, man of G-D, Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Leib Ehrblich of Sassov – (1745-1807). Born in Brod, one of the most famous giants of Chassisdus. Was the distinct disciple of the holy Gaon Rabbi Shmelke Horowitz Av Beis Din of Nikolsburg, in whose Yeshiva he studied for seven (some say thirteen) years. After his Rebbe’s passing in 1778, he began to spend his time in the shadow of the famous and holy Rebbe, Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk. During ca. late 1770’s-early 1780’s he lived for several years in the town of Apt, where he established a Yeshiva where he gave deep shiurim in Iyun. In those years he was also responsible for attracting the Yehudi HaKadosh to Chassidus. During his last years he lived in Sassov.
The holy Reb Moshe Leib was known for his exalted and lofty levels. We can learn about his immense piety and terrible fear of Hashem from a famous letter of his, where he writes about himself: “…I have never feared from the Master of Masters. And if I have not sinned it is only this that I say every day one hundred Berachos with no fear and awe, thus with my great sins I cause Hashem, blessed be He and blessed be His name, to become angry one hundred times every day” (Likutei RM”L, Chernivtsi, 1856, 18/a).
Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov was made eternally famous mainly due to his being the pillar of Chesed in his generation, and for the immense Ahavas Yisrael which burned in his bones. He was father to all orphans, champion of widows, and savior of Agunos. Toiled his entire life in deeds of charity and chessed with joy, devotion, and passion, personally going door-to-door for the sake of Pidyon Shvuyim, Hachnossas Kallah, bringing peace between people and marital tranquility. Most known stories regarding him surround these topics. His quotes: “If you are not a faithful lover of Jews, you have not begun to taste fear of Hashem”, and “a person who cannot bring himself to suction off boils and wounds from Jewish children with his mouth – has not reached even half of the level of Ahavas Yisroel”, are famous.
It is told of him that “He would always feel with another’s pain, as though it was his own, and he endeavored to provide and sustain orphans, and with his own holy hands would wash their head and heal them when they were stricken with boils… and would bandage them” (Zechut Yisrael, Eser Tzachtzchos, Jerusalem, 2001 ed. Pg. 69-70). Many of his deeds of chessed were preformed in secrecy and in private. Sometimes he would disguise himself in the deep of night, put on a gentile’s attire so that he would not be recognized, and bring firewood to the homes of poor mothers of newborns, and as he walked would say the verses of “Tikkun Chatzos”. His disciple, the “Ateres Tzvi” of Zidetchov, who secretly followed him and witnessed all this quoted regarding him the words (Tehillim, 77:20): “Your path in many waters, and Your footsteps were not seen” (ibid.)
Fragments of his Chiddushim on Shas (mostly on tractate Kesubos), as well as his sayings regarding Avodas Hashem and the Parshiyos, were printed in various anthologies, and were later fully arranged by his grandson, Rabbi Nechemia Shapiro, Av Beis Din of Sassov, in his Sefer ‘Chiddushei HaRM”L’ 3 vol. (Vienna, 1921). In his letters he frequently quotes the Chiddushim of his Rebbe, the holy Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg. An echo of his dealings with Agunos can be found in responsa “Neta Sha’ashu’im” (Zolkiew, 1829) by Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Kara, Even Ha’ezer section, §79: “and I was approached… headed by the friend of Hashem and myself, the famous Rabbi and Chossid Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Leib of Sassov requested, in his holy handwriting, that I look into her issue”. See also “Yeshu’os Yaakov”, Even Ha’ezer, §17, in the short commentary, §30: “See the long commentary in the response I wrote regarding this to the Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov”.
His disciples were from the famous giants of Chassidus: “The Masterof the House of the Zohar” – the holy “Ateres Tzvi” of Zidetchov, the holy Gaon of Butchach – author of “Da’as Kedoshim” and “Eshel Avraham”, the holy Rebbe the “Ahavas Shalom” of Kossov, the holy Rebbe, Rabbi Meir of Premisla, and Rabbi Yisrael of Berdichev, Av Beis Din of Pikov and Berdichev (son of the “Kedushas Levi”).
We can learn about the wonderous holiness of his writings from a story that happened by his disciple, the holy Gaon of Butchach “At the time of the great fire in Butchach which happened of Shabbos, and the holy Gaon Rabbi Avraham David mourned for his writings, and then he was informed that the chest with his writings was sitting out in the street, and his face changed, and he said ‘I do not feel any merit, only this that in it lay a holy letter from my holy teacher Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov’” (Zechut Yisrael, Eser Tzachtzchos, Pp. 68-69).
Handwritten manuscripts of Rabbi Moshe Leib are extremely rare!
Regarding the scarcity of the Sassover’s manuscripts, his grandson, Rabbi Nechemia Shapiro writes in the preface to ‘Chiddushei HaRM”L’ (Vienna, 1921): “…the paper which my holy grandfather Rabbi Moshe Z”L used to write on, as well as the ink he used, were not of good quality at all, and his holy handwriting was handsome and very fine, so that due to much handling by many, who, pardon their honor, did not know and understand how to give proper honor to this treasure to keep from touching it with their hands, especially with unclean hands, the manuscript was severely blurred and torn, and as time passed was ruined to the degree that not one article was left without damage.” Further on in the preface he tells that once, when the manuscripts were by Rabbi Yekusiel Shmelke, R’ Moshe Leib’s son, “…a burning candle fell on the holy manuscript…and several complete pages of it were burnt…” Thus it is clear why his manuscripts are so rare and inaccessible.
The holy Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Shalom Yosef Friedman, the “Pe’er Yisrael” of Bohush (1856-1923), was the son of the first Admor of Bohush, Rabbi Yitzchak Friedman, and of the Rebbetzin Sheina Rachel, daughter of the holy Rabbi Moshe Leib Sassover’s daughter. He established in Bohush a Yeshiva named “Beis Yisrael”. Was a member of the presidium of Kollel Romania. During his lifetime, six Shteiblach of Bohush Chassidim were established in Eretz Yisrael: in Tzfas, Tveriah, and Yerushalayim. His teachings were gathered in the Sefer “Pe’er Yisrael” (Jerusalem, 1979).
