Large handwritten volume, Chiddushim of Maran the Chassam Sofer on tractate Gittin – Pressburg, winter 1835 – written by his disciple the Gaon Rabbi Efraim Kutner – with changes from the printed version as well as some Chiddushim that were not printed.


Chiddushei Chassam Sofer on tractate Gittin, from the beginning till p. 38. Has some slight differences from the printed Chiddushim. This volue also contains several Chiddushim that were not printed in ‘Chiddushei Chassam Sofer’ on Gittin.

On the title page of the volume, a notation:
“I purchased this to write in it the Chiddushei Torah which I have heard from the speech of the holy mouth, i.e. our master and teacher the Rav, the Gaon who is lauded by all, pride and honor of the generation, honored id his Torah, our teacher Rabbi Moshe Sofer, during the studies in the Yeshiva in the winter of the year “שלם ורב טוב” (5595 / 1835), the start of tractate Gittin, with Hashem’s help – Efraim Kutner”.

Further down on the title page is a full signature of the writer: The young, Efraim son of my father and teacher, the Rav, the greater light, the complete wisdom, his praises cannot be sung, the deceased Rabbi Yosef of Kutna OBM, Av Beis Din and Rosh Mesivta of… Tata…”

Additional signature at the top of the title page: “the young Mendel, son of …”

On p. 1/a, before starting the actual Chiddushim, is written: “Eve of the 3rd of Marcheshvan 5595 (Nov. 5, 1834), in the studies in the Yeshiva here in Pressburg. (This date was printed at the beginning of ‘Chiddushei Chassam Sofer’ on Gittin).

The Gaon Rabbi Efraim Kutner was one of the disciples of the Chassam Sofer. Son of Rabbi Yosef of Kutna, Av Beis Din of Tata, and brother of Rabbi Aharon of Kutna, Av Beis Din of Tata (both from the leading disciples of the Chassam Sofer).
