The Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried (1804-1886) the renowned Rabbi of Uzhhorod. Was a disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Heller, author of “Tiv Gittin”. In his youth he was the Chavrusa of Admor the holy Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Liska. In 1843 he was appointed Rabbi of Bresowicz, and in 1850 was appointed Raavad of his birth city of Uzhhorod, a position he held till his passing. Authored many Seforim, amongst them “Kesset HaSofer”, “Torat Zevach”, “Lechem Vesimla”, and “Ohalei Shem”. He was most famous for his monumental “Kitzur Shulchan Aruch”, a foundational Sefer for any Jewish home, which was already printed in 14 editions within his lifetime. Already at the tender age of 20, the Chassam Sofer wrote of him: “Wonder worker and exalted Tzaddik” the holy Gaon Rabbi Shimon Sofer writes of him: “I merited to greet him and receive his blessing”. It is told that the Maharam Shick, before his passing, said of the great benefit he had done to the world with his works: “How great is the merit of Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried with his works” – and his eyes filled with tears. At the age of 30, in 1834, he published his work on the Halachot of Sta”M, “Keset Sofer”, for the first time. On this Sefer he received a famous and enthusiastic approbation from the Chassam Sofer, who approves the Sefer with great strength, writing as follows: “I have studied it in depth and went through it from beginning to end and ‘you are lovely, by beloved, and no blemish is in you’, aims truly to the law… I command all my disciples who are required to listen to me that from the day of the printing of this Sefer, “Keset HaSofer”… that from now on they should not give permission or diploma to any scribe unless he is well-versed and fluent in this Sefer… and a scribe who is not versed in this Sefer shall be disqualified from his work”.
